Paul, you can save yourself a lot of time in crafting satire by linking BP articles. Who knew that when you determined to take up this part of the blog that Baptist Men and NAMB would provide all that was needed without writing a line.

Yo.

Oh no! I thought this was just pure satire, ala Lark News or something. But, I just read the link and see that this is really happening! Wow.

The other day, I got a call from a stranded family needing $15 brake pads. They had called other churches, but no one would help them. I experienced my usual hesiticancy because we often get scammed by people. After hearing the lady's story, it was obviously legit, so I helped them. Driving away, I had a thought that I think was from the Lord. Basically, I realized that the church scams hundreds of millions of dollars a year from people by taking tithes and offerings in Jesus' names and then spending the money on ourselves in the form of buildings and staff. Sure, we call it outreach, but that is hard to defend when the church is everywhere in decline.

1.6 million children per year die from preventable disease related to dirty drinking water. For $10 billion we could provide lean drinking water to every man, woman, and child on the planet. THis year, Americans will spend up to $500 billion on Christmas presents. Also, the 1.6 million number is equivalent to the number of babies that will be aborted in America in a given year.

I say all of this to say that we say we are pro-life, but we could save over a million children a year if we put our money in the right place. What if Southern Baptists initiated a campaign to irradicate deaths by water borne diseases through providing clean drinking water for the world? Similar to the One campaign, being the largest Protestant denomination in the world, couldn't we spearhead something great, use our churches as collection points, and partner with others to provide clean drinking water, no strings attached? What if we took up the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa? Turn the ERLC loose to lobby the government for funds. Use the CP for that. Set as a goal to raise $25 billion in the next 5 years and address multiple problems at once.

In 5 years, millions of lives would be saved (we say we are pro-life, remember), everyone would see Southern Baptists differently, the gospel would be preached through word and deed (we do this because Jesus told us to - Matt. 25), a generation of young people would be mobilized, trust would be restored among the churches, and churches would be working together again on a cause bigger than themselves - something that they cannot do alone.

What if the GCR Task Force came up with ideas like that? What if?

Sorry for the long comment, Paul, but you got me thinking.

Had not read the BP piece. Chalk this one up to a book title I have on my shelf, "Adventures In Missing the Point."

When I was in college, First Baptist Church of Huntsville celebrated the completion of their $1.2 million Bell Tower on World Hunger Day. Later that year, my summer missions supervisor from the UP of Michigan visited me and I drove him by there. He said, "Do you know what we could do with that money? How many churches that would plant?"

It about broke my heart.

Great piece Paul!
